Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2010: “The Broadway Production”

There’s no doubt that Marc Jacobs and the 80s have a beautiful, eternal love affair that can never be broken or replaced. But because of Marc Jacobs’ brilliance and his ability to be in-tune with the world around him, his complete and utter originality in finding true inspirations from what and who he admires, his Spring/Summer 2010 was a refreshing, literally beautiful collection, and a completely different one from what you would expect.

A Broadway production; the collection featured romantic yet sporty ruffles, beautiful prints, sequins and gorgeous soft colors; a complete contrast from his previous collection (even the dreaded “fanny pack” made an appearance, and he made it look so cool!) adding to the already established trend for next Spring/Summer, the sporty-chic look.

Marc Jacobs is in a different mood right now, soon to wed his fiancé Lorenzo Martone in Provincetown, we can certainly feel romance in the air. There was clear influence form Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, who has always remained icon admired by Jacobs, models were in theatrical Kabuki makeup, the collection was absolutely romantic in that of Marc Jacobs’ way, and had a definite mixture of references from Broadway. Marc Jacobs explained his collection in just once sentence: “If last season was a trip back in time to the eighties, this was a trip to the theater, the ballet, the opera”. Indeed it was, and what a joyous trip.

As always in Marc Jacobs fashion shows, there was a strict “No Celebrities” to attend, except Madonna and Lady Gaga. Instead it was filled with editors like American Vogue’s Anna Wintour and Suzy Menkes of The International Herald Tribune and fashion bloggers. V magazine organized a great after-party at the Hiro Ballroom in The Maritime Hotel, in which Lady Gaga performed on a piano. Janet Jackson, Lindsay Lohan, Ciara, Estelle, Rachel Zoe and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld were among the attendees.
