Balenciaga Spring/Summer 2010: “Urban Warrior”

The brilliance of designer Nicolas Ghesquière for Balenciaga literally gets better season by season, and this collection is a definite solid justification of that. To appreciate Ghesquière genius, you must have an admiration for the details; the details in the design, shape, fabric, material, colors and cut, and this is all just in one piece.

The collection was about going back to Ghesquière’s roots, and growing from there; articulate cuts and designs made out of luxurious techno fabrics and laser cuts.

The opening looks were a clear reference to sporty-chic (on trend for next Spring/Summer), with gorgeous futuristic (a signature adjective for Balenciaga) molded leather and woven jersey hoodies, on top of pants look like gray-blue denim when they are actually vegetable-dyed leather, releasing the urban warrior within everywoman. Followed by chic coat-dresses (again on trend), laser-cut skirts and pants with eloquent mesmerizing colors and see-through skirts and tops in black, orange and red that look like a collage of large prints, strikingly beautiful. The collection ended on astonishing latticework skirts that shivered like porcupine quills, flashing shots of green and maroon in movement. And as journalist Sara Mower of Style.com rightfully stated: “That kind of work can’t be replicated anywhere else but in this house.”

Luxury [today] doesn’t mean anything, except in the quality of execution,” Ghesquière said. Anyone can argue with the designer’s statement, but in my eyes: this collection is the embodiment of ART TO WEAR.
