On October 6th, fashion designer Alexander McQueen debuted his highly anticipated and much publicized Spring/Summer 2010 collection to the entire world, streaming live via collaboration with Nick Night’s SHOWstudio. And the entire world of fashion and fashion followers grasped in amazement the spectacular collection as it evolved piece by piece. Titled “Plato’s Atlantis“, it was the third in a series of collections relating to the relationship of mankind with earth. McQueen explained he was casting an apocalyptic projection of the future ecological meltdown of the world: Humankind is made up of creatures that evolved from the sea, and we may be heading back to an underwater future as the ice cap dissolves.
The dress influences were squamate reptiles; snakes and lizards and sea monsters. The result; a stunning and dramatic execution that certainly raised the bar for the incredible tour de force that is McQueen. Short dresses with hard edges dominated the run way, with each piece its intricate couture-like tailoring, was full of immaculate prints depicting the skin of reptiles, making every outfit a unique piece of art. The colors, in the start were in various earth tones of green and brown, and half way through the collection moved to “liquidy” vibrant tones of blue and aqua. And the shoes were as grotesquely magnificent as the outfits, each piece of footwear helped in completing the entire look of these wonderful creatures.
This was an exceptional collection, extraordinarily surreal, and will go down in the McQueen history book. It will always be remember and cherished for its beautiful aesthetic and execution, as his vampires collection a few years back, as well ballet collection, the hologram of Kate Moss moment, and the girl in the white dress being painted by “robots”. Alexander McQueen an artist in every sense of the word, a gift to the world, a creator and inventor, a talent and force. And I say, thank you to McQueen for sharing these with us.
I HIGHLY recommend you watch the show in its entirety here.
