This past week, Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake that toppled the foundation of life for hundreds of thousands of victims. Haiti is among the poorest nations in the world and its citizens live in extreme poverty. The nation has been fraught with hardship and suffering for years – food, shelter, disease, political unrest and a critical crime rate have been daily concerns for the people of Haiti.
In 2008, four tropical storms, including Hurricane Ike ravaged the nation of extreme poverty leaving hundreds dead and much of the nations harvest and food supply destroyed. Now in the earthquake, Haiti has already buried the bodies of 40,000 people and another 100,000 is expected to be dead while thousands more remain injured and buried in the quakes. The death toll could rise to 200,000 or beyond. Bodies are being loaded on to trucks and transported to mass grave sites while chaos, anarchy, and unrest continues to build in the region giving way to violence and even greater suffering.
Any act of humanitarian contribution to help aid those in need is an act of friendship toward your fellow man. Now is the time to act.
