In the film, Brazilian director Carlos Diegues engaged five Brazilian filmmakers who grew up in the favelas to tell their stories of life in poverty. Speaking of the passion and honour talented people possess even in the most difficult circumstances, the producer noted that ‘In cinema, we make films to get to know each other. Seeing their talent, I said to myself that it was time to make a serious feature film with them’. Impassioned by discovering new cinema talent in the favelas, he gave regular film lectures and mentored aspiring filmmakers who shot video with mobile phones and mini DV cameras. After four years, funding was secured for the production.

Carlos Diegues is a prolific Brazilian director and a member of the Cinéfondation and Short Film Jury at Cannes 2010
