The wardrobe is full of prints and colours with green, blue and yellow making appearances all over. The casual-yet-chic sporty styles of Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs will surely be a hit. The prints resemble a botanic garden, from Dolce & Gabbana’s sweet fruit inspired collection and Mary Katrantzou fascination with the species of flowers to Prabal Gurung’s almost hypnotic  manifestation, even Raf Simmons brought paisley back for Jil Sander.

The Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2011-2012 season was of feathers and frills hinting at a wilder side but subdued with a combination in some instances of contemporary elegance. From Gaultier’s gender-bending strict tailoring, here inspired by ballerinas and choreographers, Alexis Mabille’s Jean de La Fontaine fables inspired animals, and Iris van Herpen’s ambitious fancy, to the “purity, lightness, fragility” of Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy’s astonishing collection, Giorgio Armani’s modern homage to Japan and Giambattista Valli’s premier couture collection extraordinaire.

Manjal http://squa.re/?p=153193 It was a season of sports, from Prada’s golf inspired collection (she said that she hates golf!) to Dolce & Gabbana’s fishing inspired collection. There were lots of prints that dominated most collections, with navy blue, mustard yellow, pink and hot red as staple colours. While often we shy away from trends because they never last, we feel the sports influenced Spring/Summer 2012 season would be of timeless value. Sports are part of almost every man’s life, whether they watch it or participate it in. On top of that, the added element of the casual without compromising the luxe makes these trends even more attractive to us.

Manjal http://squa.re/?p=15205 In my not-so-humble opinion, I believe the strongest collections from Women Fall/Winter 2011-2012 Fashion Week(s) came courtesy of those designers and houses that do not obey to fleeting trends, but rather feast on their own imagination and unique DNA. These include a promising first women’s collections by Nicola Formichetti for Thierry Mugler, Thom Browne’s men’s wardrobe fitted on women with a 60s burst, Christophe Lemaire’s sportive-lux for Hermès while retaining every bit of the French house’s heritage, and fierce second collections by Haider Ackermann and Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. Other highlights were Dries van Noten’s unusual collage of Ziggy Stardust with The Ballets Russes, Viktor & Rolf’s protective armors with bloody faces and Raf Simon’s perfect hybrid of skiwear and haute couture at Jil Sander.

AIFW events went beyond the runway and party circuit, encompassing chocolate shops, galleries, and movie theaters in the city, all focusing on fashion-related themes for the week. The collections which we loved the most [links below] were those with original, interesting design themes of course, but also those which used premium fabrics, combining textures and colors in creative ways. Look through the list below of our favorite collections from AIFW Fall/Winter 2011-2012 to check out some names from the land that brought you globally recognized labels such as Viktor & Rolf and United Nude. Comparing my first time at AIFW to time spent previously at New York or Paris’ Fashion Weeks, what stood out most is the aforementioned sense of celebration, on and off the runways, and also amongst the fashion and press crowd who attended.

Speaking with two of my favorite fashion people in Amsterdam, Sonny Groo and Edwin Goudens Vdh [stylist duo extraordinaire, and founders of the much-talked about, young magazine Mykromag] about their favorite aspect of the Dutch fashion scene, they stated that it was people they work with, because they make them happy and make them smile, and make for a great team. This is exactly what I mean. While I wish I was able to show you this happy, celebratory vibe in text, I can’t.
