At this year’s Art Dubai Van Cleef and Arpels celebrated its one hundred years of existence with an exclusive exhibition dedicated to the Poetry of Time. Upon entering the exhibition the visitor embarked on an enchanted and magical promenade; watches were elegantly displayed side by side as if they were paintings each telling a particular story. A few masterpiece watches were given their own dimly lit room so that guests could concentrate on their intriguing beauty.
Revealed were the inner workings of each watch and how such unseen contraptions contributed to the exterior effect and refinement of each Van Cleef and Arpels watch. In order to emphasize this idea, a workshop was given by master watchmaker Jean-Marc Wiederrecht where he explored the hidden mechanisms of watches to the public. At another workshop Dominique Barron revealed her enameling technique highlighting her use of pigment to create luxurious settings.
The watches on display told a story; the beauty of their gestures and the delicately enameled fairytale on their dial transformed what technical complexity into an aesthetic poetic masterpiece. One story told of a couple each represented by a watch hand. Each had to pass the hours until they could finally meet at midday or midnight and give each other a kiss.
The imaginative genius of these designs reflects the elegant sophistication and persistent creativity of Van Cleef and Arpels. Such vision and attention to craftsmanship will surely continue to ensure the exceptional uniqueness, timelessness, and poetic wonderment of Van Cleef and Arpels.
