In the hypercompetitive world of celebrity fragrance, Lady Gaga needed only seven days to reach all-star status. Fame, her debut perfume, launched this past fall in collaboration with Coty and was an instant home run. It sold more bottles in one week than any other celebrity fragrance of 2011, making it the most successful launch in history
Timely Timepieces, in keeping with the esoteric tradition of horology (the study of time-keeping devices), is a recurring feature that watches what’s fashionable in the not-quite-obsolete world of watches. Ke$ha’s latest collaborative timepiece for Casio’s Baby-G collection will be available in stores December 2012 to coincide with the release of the global superstar’s second studio album, Warrior
Stella Tennant in Maison Martin Margiela Rihanna under her umbrella-ella-ella Four days after Hurricane Sandy maimed New York, much of the city remains flooded, without power, and in a waning state of emergency. There are gas shortages , increased muggings downtown, no heat, no Halloween , and perhaps worst of all, no WiFi.
We’re still without power here in lower Manhattan, but we can see glimmers of hope all over this darkened city. Like Naked Label ’s new video for S/S ‘13 line, “Refraction.” Exclusively premiering here at VMagazine.com, this little clip shows kaleidoscopic new jewelry created by Florida native and New York resident Allison Press, who worked with
We’ve already talked about Lana del Rey’s epic video for “Ride,” which follows a biker groupie through the Southwestern desert. But did we mention that Christina Aguilera’s video for “Your Body” is in a cactus-strewn trailer park, and that Chris Brown’s “Don’t Judge Me” and Ciara’s “Got Me Good” feature long walks down desolate, Southern California highways? And that Grimes’s “Genesis” utilizes the mountainous backdrop of the Southwest, too?
Since the tragic passing of band member Sean Stewart in 2010, HTRK (pronounced “Hate Rock,” and formerly “Hate Rock Trio”) has produced dark, under-the-radar tracks with so little progression, they can feel defiantly depressive. Actually, those are the types of songs HTRK has always put out, three or two members, with guests or alone. We like to think it’s what Stewart would have wanted—for the band to keep up the tradition of creating post-industrial goth-inspired slow-drum-machined cinematic indulgences
Habibi’s songs are heavily influenced by Motown girl groups of the 1960s, but I wouldn’t mistake their retro-centricity for nostalgia. The all-female all-business Brooklyn-based band would rather live in a time when music wasn’t defined by gender, surely—but their respect for the ladies who paved the way for their Wall-of-Sound sound is epic. Lead singer and founder Rahill Jamalifard borrows perhaps in equal parts from her Detroit-based adolescence, her Persian background, and her New York experience.
